Frequently Asked Questions About Infusion Therapy
What is infusion therapy?
Home infusion therapy delivers medication into your bloodstream using an IV or a catheter instead of taking them orally, through your mouth. Medicines commonly prescribed for home infusion therapy include antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, pain relievers and immune globulin. Enteral nutrition and parenteral nutrition are provided by either a feeding tube or IV infusion therapy.
New England Life Care provides a broad range of inpatient and outpatient infusion therapies for patients in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont.
What conditions might benefit from infusion therapy?
By far, the most common home infusion therapy prescriptions are for antibiotics to fight cellulitis, sepsis, and osteomyelitis, urinary tract infections, pneumonia and many other conditions. Patients with infections that are resistant to oral antibiotics, cancer or cancer-related pain, gastrointestinal diseases or disorders, congestive heart failure, growth hormone deficiencies and more may benefit from infusion therapy.
Can I receive my infusion therapy at home?
Until the 1980s, patients that needed infusion therapy had to stay in the hospital for as long as they needed it. For patients requiring long-term IV infusion therapy, this was a costly and devastating burden.
Home infusion therapy has been proven to be a safe and effective alternative to hospitalization for many conditions. While patients may start their infusion therapy in the hospital, infusion center, rehab or skilled nursing facility, most prefer to continue their infusion therapy in the comfort of their own home. Home infusion therapy can even allow patients to return to work and the active lifestyle they love!
New England Life Care’s 24/7 infusion therapy services, home nursing and specialized pharmacy services make home infusion therapy possible for patients living in downtown Boston to rural Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont..
Will I, or my caregivers, be able to manage my home infusion therapy?
YES. In most cases, our skilled, certified home infusion nursing staff can teach you and your caregivers how to administer your own infusion therapy. Our specialized pharmacy services deliver the supplies you need, where and when you need them—even in emergency situations or when you are on vacation!
New England Life Care patients have the additional reassurance of knowing their home infusion nurse or pharmacist is never more than a phone call away, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Will Medicare cover home infusion?
Some home infusion services are covered by Medicare Part B and / or Part D. Your personal coverage will depend on a number of factors.
New England Life Care patients know that our dedicated Reimbursement Program staff will advocate for home infusion therapy and specialized pharmacy coverage on their behalf with insurance companies. We handle authorizations, verify benefits, submit claims and help patients secure financial aid when necessary. We want your focus to be on your healing.
