For more than 50 years, Donald and his family have spent their summers on Cape Cod. This year, with a new diagnosis of end-stage heart disease requiring continuous Milrinone therapy, that cherished family tradition seemed to be at risk—until a coordinated team effort made his vacation dream a reality.
Originally from Rochester, NY, Donald was told by his local home infusion provider that they could not support his therapy needs while he was in Massachusetts. The life-sustaining nature of the medication meant skipping treatment—and the trip—was simply not an option.
That’s when a team of dedicated professionals sprang into action. New England Life Care’s Lisa Browne, Director of Nurse Liaisons, worked closely with Beth Diiorio, Intake & Liaison Referral Specialist, and Sheila Mai, Clinical Pharmacist at NELC’s Canton location. Together, they coordinated with Donald’s care team at the University of Rochester Heart Failure Clinic, his home infusion provider in New York, and the Cape Cod Visiting Nurse Association.
Over the course of several days, the team navigated insurance approvals, secured physician orders, confirmed delivery logistics, and ensured all service details were in place. Thanks to their commitment and persistence, Donald’s summer plans were back on track.
When he arrived on Cape Cod, Donald immediately introduced himself to Lisa, sharing, “I’m a psychologist. I invented Cognitive Behavioral Modification Therapy,” and proudly offered his website. Lisa later admitted, with a smile, “I had no idea who he was, or that he was famous.”
What truly stood out, however, was Donald’s reaction to the care he received. He was surprised to learn that this level of support wasn’t reserved for special cases: “You do this for everyone?” he asked. Lisa assured him, “We try to give this extra special treatment to all our patients.” That sentiment made a lasting impression.
His son, David, later said, “You have treated us like family.”
Today, Donald is enjoying a peaceful summer on the Cape, surrounded by loved ones, continuing a beloved family tradition thanks to a seamless, compassionate collaboration across teams and states.
At New England Life Care, we are proud to help make moments like these possible—for every patient, every day.
